Evening Conversation: Taxes, Education and the Economy

The City Club of Boise will be a launching a new Evening Conversation event designed to bring differing, and potentially contentious view points to the table, while allowing a civil and engaged audience into the conversation. Our aspiration is that during the dialog portion of this event, Members may disagree without being disagreeable and in keeping with those values, zealous advocacy will be embraced, as long as such advocacy is civil, responsible, and reflects City Club’s mission. We ask guests of this evening conversation to be mindful of others during the engaged dialog bound to occur during these conversations, and beyond. Our hope is that this intimate setting will open the doors for even more engaged citizenry in our community around relevant and difficult topics to be presented.

The first topic to be hosted for this new City Club event surrounds the impact of taxes, tax increases and tax cuts on Idaho’s economy and on education. 

Lauren Necochea, Director of the Idaho Center for Fiscal Policy, and Miguel Legarreta, President of the Associated Taxpayers of Idaho, will discuss their perspectives on these issues.  As mentioned, the attendees will have an opportunity to join in the discussion.  In a time of increasing incivility, the intent of this Evening Conversation is to provide a safe place for attendees to hear differing viewpoints on this topic, and to join in the discussion. 

Civility will be required.  City Club champions “passionately non-partisan” discussion between diverse perspectives.

Event Cost: $15 City Club members & general public

Attendance will be limited to 20 people to allow everyone the opportunity to engage in the conversation. 

Water and lite refreshments will be provided during this event.

Panelist Biographies:

Lauren Necochea has directed programs for Jannus since 2011. Lauren previously oversaw and evaluated programs addressing children’s safety and health hazards for the Baltimore City Health Department. Prior to that, she was a policy fellow with joint appointments at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Princeton University’s Center for Health and Wellbeing. She has evaluated anti-poverty programs internationally and was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to study microfinance in Peru. Lauren earned her Master in Public Affairs at Princeton University and holds a B.A. in Economics from Pomona College.

Miguel Legarreta has been president of the Associated Taxpayers of Idaho since July 2016. Legarreta has over 14 years of government affairs experience. He served in Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne’s administration and worked as the director of public policy for the Boise Regional REALTORS. Legarreta earned a BS in business administration at the College of Idaho with a concentration in finance.
