Description

Tour: Intermountain Bird Observatory at the Diane Moore Nature Center

Late summer, early fall is a great time to visit the Intermountain Bird Observatory on the Boise River, a gem right in our backyard. This is a great opportunity to tour a research center so accessible to us and learn about their work with birds of many local and transient species. From banding to monitoring to education, join us for this unique event and an update on the expansion plans.

Accessibility: This tour will cover about 1 to 1.5 miles of walking (round trip) at a slow pace over the course of about 90 minutes. We will walk mostly along flat terrain with a few small hills. We will cover some uneven terrain including river rock and sand. Depending on the water levels in the side channel and the group's interest, we may use stepping stones to cross the channel.

There are no restrooms on site. The nearest restroom is at Discovery State Park, located about 3 minutes up Highway 21.

There are few opportunities to sit so plan to remain standing for the duration of the tour.

Bring: Wear appropriate layers to keep you comfortable outdoors for about a 90 minute walk along the property. Be sure to check the forecast and wear layers to adapt to the temperature and protect from the sun. We will be walking along sandy and rocky trails, so tennis shoes, trail shoes, teva-type sandals, or other shoes with some tread will be best. You might enjoy bringing binoculars or a camera as there will be plenty of nice scenery and we may run into some birds or other wildlife. You should bring a water bottle, and a hat for sun protection.

We will walk near some patches of Poison Ivy so you will want to keep a sharp eye, or wear long pants.
