Description

The Marilyn Shuler Human Rights Forum: I'm Fine- A Conversation About Teen Mental Health

City Club brings people together to explore community issues and hear diverse viewpoints by creating spaces where conversations happen. In this spirit we proudly host the 8th annual Marilyn Shuler Human Rights Forum, celebrating the legacy of an outstanding leader in human rights in Idaho.

Ms. Shuler was a founding member of City Club and an advocate for children. In honor of her work to advance opportunities for young people, the 2023 Forum is led by a team of high school students, coached by City Club mentors. And they have things to tell you.

A recently released CDC report revealed nearly all indicators of poor mental health and suicidal thoughts and behaviors increased from 2011 to 2021. The data is particularly alarming for girls: more than 1 in 4 girls reported they seriously considered attempting suicide in 2021, and more than 1 in 10 girls reported attempting suicide in 2021 - up significantly from 2011.

What is happening, and what can we do about it? Join us for a very real conversation about mental health - a basic human right. The program includes spoken word poetry by student planning team member, Rafielle Novak; and truth-telling and inspiration by local comedians Beth Norton and Katie Lotz. We are pleased to recognize the work of this year's Student Honoree: Lauren Legarreta, a current Senior at Boise High School.

Also at the event, a resource fair for mental health, and an “Ask a Teen” booth to get honest answers beyond “I’m fine.”
